UPCYCLING OBSOLETE MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT INTO INNOVATIVE LABORATORY TEST RIGS: A LOW-COST SOLUTION OR A SUSTAINABLE DESIGN APPROACH?

Abstract Circular Economy (CE) and the potential of reusing recycling products after end their life, becomes imperative for environmental, economic social reasons. Especially during 4th Industrial Revolution that is taking place nowadays, an increasing number out-of-date equipment has to be replaced, which constitutes a chance necessity reused, through recycling, redesigning remanufacturing. The paper presents proof-of-concept studies regarding upcycling obsolete outdated into novel test rigs mainly addressing research activities. Three such case are presented, namely injection moulding machine modular bench power hydraulic components, scrap components hybrid hydraulic/ ICE powertrain rig functional augmentation gear roll tester accommodate single double flank tests. Significant savings in cost, raw materials time demonstrated all cases adherence CE objectives observed.
